What can cause 40E
- An ice-room fan motor that has stopped turning due to wear or a failed bearing

- A loose or corroded connector on the wiring run to this fan, which sits in a tighter, more humid space than the main evaporator fan
- Debris from ice buildup breaking off and lodging against the fan housing
What to check first
- Listen near the ice maker compartment specifically for unusual noise, since this problem is isolated to that section rather than the whole freezer
- Watch ice production over a day or two; slowed or stopped ice-making alongside 40E supports a fan-related cause in that compartment
- If accessible without disassembly, look for visible ice packed around the ice-room fan area
- Check that the ice maker compartment door or flap, if your model has one, is closing fully, since a gap lets warm air in and accelerates icing
Because the ice-room fan is smaller and positioned closer to the ice maker’s moving parts than the main evaporator fan, a technician generally needs to remove the ice maker assembly to inspect or replace it. A manual defrost of the compartment can sometimes clear ice-related jams, but a motor that has actually failed will not resume running afterward.
