The 21E code on Samsung refrigerators (shared across the RF, RS, RT, and RB lines) indicates a problem with the freezer evaporator fan — the fan responsible for circulating cold air from the evaporator coils into the freezer compartment.
Why 21E shows up
- A freezer fan motor that has seized, worn out its bearings, or stopped spinning entirely
- Ice buildup around the fan blade physically blocking it from turning
- A loose or corroded wiring connector between the fan and the main control board
- A fan blade that has come loose from its motor shaft and is spinning without moving air properly
Signs to check for
- Listen for a rattling, buzzing, or grinding noise from the back of the freezer compartment, which often means the fan blade is hitting ice or a loose part
- Feel for uneven cooling, such as the freezer running warmer than usual while the fresh food section still cools normally
- If you can safely access the rear freezer panel, look for a heavy ice buildup encasing the fan area
- Note whether the fan noise stops when the freezer door opens, since Samsung fans are wired to pause on door-open by design and that is not itself a problem
A fan blocked purely by ice can sometimes be cleared with a manual defrost — unplugging the unit for several hours with the doors open — but if 21E returns quickly afterward, the fan motor itself has likely failed and needs replacement rather than repeated defrosting. A seized motor will not restart on its own and continuing to run the unit with poor air circulation can lead to spoiled food in the freezer.
