A Samsung refrigerator displaying 5E is reporting a defrost sensor failure. RF, RS, RT, and RB models share a control-board code family, and 5E specifically points to the sensor that tells the board when the evaporator coils have cleared frost during the defrost cycle.
What causes a 5E reading
- A defrost sensor (thermistor) that has failed open or shorted, sending no usable signal to the board
- A wiring harness connector near the evaporator that has corroded from years of condensation exposure
- Heavy ice buildup around the sensor itself, which can mimic a sensor failure electrically
- A control board that is misreading an otherwise functional sensor due to a firmware or connection issue
What you can look at
- Listen for the compressor and fans; if the fridge still seems to be cooling, note that so a technician knows the problem is isolated to sensing rather than cooling
- If comfortable removing the back interior freezer panel, look for visible frost buildup, which points more toward a defrost heater or timer issue than the sensor itself
- Check that nothing has been pushed against the rear wall of the freezer blocking airflow around the evaporator
- Avoid unplugging repeatedly to “reset,” since 5E on this shared code family typically will not clear on its own if the sensor has actually failed
Because the evaporator coils sit behind a rear panel and the sensor connects directly into the main wiring harness, confirming whether it is the sensor, its wiring, or the board reading it wrong requires testing with a multimeter rather than a visual check alone. Continuing to run the fridge with a genuine sensor failure risks a full ice buildup on the coils over time.
