The compressor has failed to start or has shut down unexpectedly, and the board locks it out temporarily rather than let it repeatedly try to start against a problem, which can damage the compressor motor windings.
What Can Cause This
- A recent power outage or voltage fluctuation that interrupted the compressor mid-cycle
- A failing start relay or capacitor that can’t get the compressor spinning
- The compressor cycling on and off too rapidly, tripping its internal thermal overload protection
- A genuinely worn or failed compressor motor
What to Check First
If the freezer lost power recently, unplug it and wait a full 5 minutes before restoring power — this gives the compressor’s internal pressure equalize and can clear a lockout caused by rapid cycling. Listen for a humming sound from the back of the unit right after power-up; a hum that cuts off after a few seconds without the compressor fully starting suggests a relay or capacitor issue rather than the compressor motor itself.
Avoid repeatedly unplugging and replugging the unit in quick succession, since that can worsen a compressor that’s struggling to start.
