HE (also shown as HC) on a Samsung dryer is an overheat problem — the control board has detected the drying air reaching a temperature higher than safe operating limits and shuts down the heating element or gas valve to prevent damage or a fire risk. This is one of the codes worth taking seriously rather than simply clearing and ignoring.
What causes drying air to overheat
Dryers are designed to move a steady volume of air across the heating source, and overheating almost always means that airflow has been restricted somewhere along the path rather than the heater itself running uncontrolled. Common sources include:
- A clogged lint filter or lint trap housing that’s been missed during routine cleaning
- A partially or fully blocked exhaust vent, whether from lint buildup inside a long duct run or a crushed section behind the dryer
- A vent that’s too long or has too many bends for the dryer’s fan to move air through effectively
- A failing thermostat or high-limit sensor that’s misreading actual air temperature
What to check first, and why it matters
Before restarting the dryer, clean the lint filter thoroughly and, if possible, disconnect the exhaust duct at the back of the dryer to check for buildup or blockage along its length — a clogged vent is by far the most common cause of this code and also a genuine fire hazard if ignored. Check the exterior vent cap as well, since debris, nesting, or a stuck damper can restrict airflow just as much as an internal clog.
If the vent path is fully clear and HE still appears, the thermostat or high-limit sensor inside the dryer likely needs testing, which involves accessing internal components near the heating element or gas burner — that part of the diagnosis is best left to a technician.
