Understanding error code E-11.

Humidity sensor circuit issue.

E-11 on a Samsung microwave falls in the gas and humidity sensor failure group, part of the sensor-cook system that lets the microwave judge doneness by reading the steam and vapor a food releases rather than relying only on a fixed timer. This code means the control board isn’t getting a valid signal from that sensor.

What the sensor does and why it fails

Samsung’s Sensor Cook feature relies on a small humidity/gas sensor mounted near the cavity’s air vent, which tracks how quickly steam builds during cooking and adjusts time automatically. An E-11 problem generally comes from:

  • The sensor itself failing electrically after years of exposure to cooking vapor and grease
  • A buildup of grease or residue coating the sensor and blocking an accurate reading
  • A loose or corroded connector between the sensor and the control board
  • A control board that has stopped processing a signal the sensor is sending correctly

What you can check first

Locate the vent sensor opening, usually near the exhaust vent inside or at the top of the cavity, and clean around it gently with a cloth dampened in mild soapy water — avoid spraying cleaner directly into the vent opening. Power the microwave off at the breaker for a minute afterward and test a short manual (non-sensor) cook to confirm basic heating still works while E-11 is addressed separately.

If E-11 persists after cleaning, the sensor itself is the most likely failure point and typically needs replacement rather than repair. Reaching it requires opening the microwave’s outer housing, which on built-in and over-the-range units means removing the unit from its cabinet or wall mount first — not a project to start without proper support for the appliance’s weight.
