Why the fan stops responding

- A failed fan speed control or relay on the control board, which can leave lights working while the fan circuit is dead
- A jammed or grease-clogged blower wheel that’s mechanically blocking the motor from turning
- A blown thermal fuse — many hood motors include one that trips if the motor overheats, cutting fan power specifically
What to check before calling for service
With the hood powered off at the breaker, remove the filters and look at the blower wheel opening for visible grease buildup or debris that could be physically restricting the fan — this is one of the more common owner-fixable causes, especially on hoods that haven’t had regular filter cleaning. Try each fan speed setting individually, since a problem on one speed but not others points to the control board rather than the motor itself.
If the blower wheel spins freely by hand when power is off but the motor won’t engage electrically, the motor, its relay, or the thermal fuse likely needs testing and replacement — work that involves accessing the motor housing above the hood’s fan chamber and is best handled by a technician familiar with the assembly.
