Samsung microwaves (ME countertop, MC combination, MS solo) use a control system that displays fairly specific error codes, which makes them easier to diagnose than many appliances — as long as you know which code family you’re looking at, since microwaves share some codes with Samsung’s range/oven lineup but also have several unique to microwave function.
Common Error codes
- C-10 / C-11 / C-12 — gas/PH sensor failure, related to the sensor cook feature that adjusts cook time automatically.
- C-20 / C-21 / C-22 — temperature sensor failure.
- C-d0 / C-d1 / C-d2 — door or key problem; check that the door is latching fully and the interlock switches aren’t obstructed.
- C-F0 / C-F1 / C-F2 — communication problem between boards.
- E-11 through E-14 — gas sensor error codes specific to the microwave’s cooking sensor.
- E-21 through E-26 — temperature-related error codes.
- E-31 through E-36 — weight or door sensor error codes, relevant on models with auto-cook features that weigh the food.
- E-81 through E-83 — communication error codes.
- -SE- — key short, meaning a control panel button is registering as continuously pressed.
- TE — touch panel communication problem.
Symptoms Worth Checking Before Calling for Service
A microwave that runs but doesn’t heat is one of the most common complaints and usually points to a failing magnetron or high-voltage diode — not something to open up and test yourself, since microwave ovens store high voltage even when unplugged. A turntable that won’t turn is often just the drive coupler or support ring being misaligned or dirty rather than a motor failure. Sparking inside the cavity is commonly caused by metal trim on dishes or a worn spot on the interior wave guide cover, not a control failure.
What Homeowners Can Safely Check
- Confirm the door closes fully and the latch isn’t obstructed by food debris — this affects both C-d0 codes and safety interlocks.
- Check that the turntable, roller ring, and glass tray are seated correctly and turning freely.
- Clean the interior wave guide cover (the small panel usually on the cavity’s side or back wall) — a food-splattered cover is a common, cheap-to-fix cause of arcing.
- Avoid using metal, foil, or metallic-trimmed dishware inside the cavity.
Countertop vs. Over-the-Range vs. Combination Models
Over-the-range models add ventilation duties on top of cooking, so a “not heating” complaint should be checked separately from any fan or light issue tied to the range hood function beneath it — they’re largely independent systems sharing one housing. Combination (MC) models add a convection element for baking on top of standard microwave function, which means a heating complaint could point to either the magnetron (microwave mode) or the convection heating element (bake/roast mode) depending on which mode was in use when the problem occurred — noting which mode you were using helps narrow down the cause considerably.
When to Call a Technician
Never open the microwave’s outer housing yourself — the high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged. A “runs but doesn’t heat” symptom, repeat E-11 to E-14 sensor codes, or persistent arcing after cleaning the wave guide cover all warrant professional diagnosis.
