A Samsung refrigerator model number tells you which kind of refrigerator you own before anything else. On this site, the first two letters sort the lineup: RF is a French-door or 4-door Flex model, RS is side-by-side, RT is top-freezer and RB is bottom-freezer. Freezers start with RZ. Beyond those letters, Samsung does not publish a decoding key that we can point to, so this guide does not guess what the rest of the string means. It shows you how to use the number you have: to find the right model page, to read the codes that go with it and to give a technician what they need.
What do the first letters of a Samsung refrigerator model number mean?
According to our Samsung refrigerators overview, the RF series covers French-door and 4-door Flex models, RS models are side-by-side, RT units are top-freezer and RB models are bottom-freezer. Our freezers overview describes the RZ series as convertible freezers in most cases. That is the whole of what this site decodes, and it is the part that matters most for a buyer or owner, because configuration drives how the appliance is laid out and which questions come up first.
The same overview notes that Twin Cooling Plus is found across most of the lineup, running separate evaporators for the fridge and freezer compartments, and that Family Hub models add a touchscreen with SmartThings integration. A model number alone does not tell you which of those features your unit has, so confirm features in your owner’s manual or on the specification sheet for your exact model.
If you are shopping rather than repairing, the letters help you filter listings quickly: an RF number means a French-door or Flex layout, an RS number a side-by-side, and so on. Two refrigerators with the same first letters can still differ in features, so compare the full model number against the specification sheet before you buy, and ask the seller for the exact number rather than a series name. When buying used, ask for a photo of the rating label so you can check the number yourself.
Which Samsung refrigerator models does this site cover?
The site lists nine refrigerator models, and each has its own page with the codes that go with it:
- RS side-by-side: RS27T5200SR and RS28A500ASR.
- RF French-door and Flex: RF23A9671SR, RF23BB8600QL, RF27T5501SR, RF28R7351SR, RF28T5001SR, RF29BB8600AP and RF30BB6600QL.
These pages are service profiles for diagnostics, common symptoms and parts lookup. They do not list sizes, capacities or feature sheets, so we do not quote any. If your model is not on the list, the general refrigerator pages still apply to the same code family, and the first two letters still tell you the configuration.

What codes do the model pages show?
Every refrigerator model page on this site shows the same six codes. Samsung refrigerators, freezers and ice makers share one control-board code family, because the ice maker is a sub-assembly of the cooling system.
Per the code pages, 22E is marked mixed for repairability, while 5E, 21E, 23E, 39E and 41C need a technician. Our Samsung refrigerator error code diagnostics guide covers the full set, and standalone freezers will not show 22E because they have no separate fridge compartment.
Where do you find the model number?
Samsung puts the model number and serial number on a rating label, and the position of that label differs between refrigerator models. This site does not give a single location for refrigerators, so check your owner’s manual for where the label sits on your unit. When you find it, photograph it. Samsung model numbers mix letters and digits that are easy to confuse, such as a zero for the letter O and a one for the letter I, and one wrong character can lead to the wrong part. A photo also survives long after a hand-copied number is lost.
Our Samsung dishwasher model number guide shows the same habit for another appliance: the full number exactly as printed, plus the serial number from the same label.
What should you have ready before you call?
Four things shorten the call: the full model number exactly as printed, the serial number from the same label, any code on the display with the exact characters, and what the refrigerator was doing when the trouble started. If you are choosing between repairing and replacing, our Samsung refrigerator repair or replace guide works through that decision, and the model number is the first thing it needs.
What should you not decode yourself?
Do not assume that a letter or digit in the middle of a model number means a specific feature, color or year. We do not publish a decode for those positions, and a guessed meaning can send a repair or a purchase in the wrong direction. Use the first two letters for configuration, use the full number to find the right model page and quote the full number to a technician. For features such as FlexZone or Twin Cooling, see our Samsung Twin Cooling tips and your owner’s manual. Do not open panels or the sealed cooling system yourself; that is a technician’s job. Our Samsung refrigerator repair page explains how a visit works.
