- Machine is under 8-10 years old: at this age, a single-component failure is usually a sound investment rather than a sign the dryer is near the end of its service life.
Signs replacement is worth considering
- Recurring bE/6E (stuck button) or AC/AE (communication) codes: if these keep coming back after a prior repair, it can point to a deeper control board or wiring issue rather than one bad component.
- 3C (motor) codes on an older unit: a failing drum motor on a dryer already past 10-12 years old is one of the more expensive single repairs, and at that age it’s worth weighing against a new unit’s expected lifespan.
- Repeated overheat (HC/hE) problems: if these persist even after confirming the vent is completely clear, it may point to a thermostat or thermal cutoff system that has failed more than once, suggesting broader wear.
- Cabinet or drum damage: physical damage to the drum or a rusted-through cabinet affecting the door seal is rarely worth repairing on an older machine.
Codes worth ruling out with basic maintenance first
FC or FE (power frequency) codes and 9C1/9E1/2E (voltage) codes can sometimes stem from a household power issue rather than the dryer itself — an electrician-verified circuit check is worth doing before assuming a control board has failed. Similarly, tS or tO codes frequently trace back to a lint-clogged vent line rather than the temperature sensor, and clearing the vent is a far cheaper first step than replacing a part.
Gas vs. electric considerations
DVG gas dryers add an igniter and gas valve to the mix that DVE electric models don’t have, which means gas-specific problem patterns — slow ignition, a burner that lights but then shuts off partway through the cycle — point toward the igniter or valve rather than a heating element. On the other hand, electric dryers rely entirely on the heating element and its associated thermostats, so a no-heat complaint on a DVE model narrows down to fewer possible components than the equivalent complaint on a gas unit.
