Understanding error code HC.

Heating circuit is overheating or airflow is restricted.

HC on a Samsung dryer signals the heating system is running hotter than it should. The control board shuts the heater off and stops the cycle to prevent damage to the drum, clothing, or the unit itself once internal temperatures cross a safe threshold.

What Typically Causes an Overheat Problem

  • A lint-clogged exhaust vent that’s restricting airflow out of the dryer
  • A crushed, kinked, or overly long vent duct behind the machine
  • A lint trap that hasn’t been cleaned in several loads, forcing air to fight through buildup
  • A failing thermostat or thermal cutoff that no longer regulates heat properly

Checks You Can Do Safely

Start with the lint trap — pull it out and clean it thoroughly, including a rinse under water if you notice a waxy film from dryer sheets. Then trace the exhaust duct from the back of the dryer to its outside vent cap; disconnect it and check for lint packed inside, particularly at bends. A vent that’s too long or has too many turns restricts airflow even when clean, so consider whether the duct run can be shortened.

Let the dryer cool down fully — at least 30 minutes — before running it again, since HC often needs a reset once the internal temperature drops. If the vent is clear and the code returns on the next load, the thermostat or airflow sensor inside the cabinet is the more likely problem.

When to Call a Technician

A dryer that keeps overheating even with a clear vent path shouldn’t keep running — it’s a fire risk to ignore. Our Samsung dryer repair technicians test the thermostat, thermal fuse, and airflow sensors directly.
