Understanding error code Pan Error.

Induction zone does not detect suitable cookware.

An underlined “u” on a Samsung induction cooktop display is not a general error code — it’s the pan-detection indicator, and it means the induction zone cannot sense a compatible pot or pan on the surface. Induction cooking only works when the coil beneath the glass detects a magnetic load, so without one the burner will not heat at all.

Why induction pan detection fails

Induction coils generate a magnetic field and use the feedback from the cookware to know a pan is present before allowing power through. The “u” indicator shows up for reasons that range from simple to mechanical:

  • The cookware isn’t induction-compatible — it needs a magnetic (usually cast iron or magnetic stainless) base, not aluminum, copper, or glass
  • The pan is too small for the zone or isn’t centered over the coil
  • The pan’s bottom is warped and not sitting flat against the cooktop surface
  • The induction coil or its sensor has failed, which shows the “u” indicator even with correct cookware in place

How to confirm which one it is

Test with a magnet on the pan’s bottom — if it doesn’t stick, the cookware is the issue, not the cooktop. Try a known induction-compatible pan (most cast iron works) centered directly over the ring markings for that zone, since even compatible cookware placed off-center or hanging over the edge can trigger the “u” reading.

If a properly sized, magnetic, flat-bottomed pan still triggers “u” on one specific zone while other zones work fine with the same pan, the coil or sensor for that zone has likely failed. That’s an internal component beneath the glass surface and isn’t something to open up without experience, since the cooktop’s housing is sealed for heat and spill protection.
