An underlined “u” on a Samsung induction cooktop display isn’t an error code in the usual sense, it’s the cooktop telling you it can’t detect a compatible pan on that zone. Induction cooking only generates heat when the zone senses a ferromagnetic pan in contact with the surface, so this indicator appears whenever that detection fails.
Why the Cooktop Isn’t Detecting Your Pan
- The cookware isn’t induction-compatible; aluminum, copper, and most glass or ceramic pans won’t trigger detection
- The pan is too small for the zone, sitting outside the sensor’s detection ring
- The pan isn’t centered or is only partially touching the glass surface
- Rarely, the induction coil or sensor for that zone has failed and can’t detect any pan at all
What to Check First
Confirm the pan is induction-rated, a magnet will stick firmly to the bottom of compatible cookware, and reposition it so it’s centered and flat on the zone. Try a different pan that you know works on induction to see if the “u” clears, which tells you whether the issue is the cookware or the cooktop itself. Wipe the surface dry, since a wet base can sometimes interfere with proper contact.
When to Call a Technician
If a known-compatible pan still triggers “u” on one specific zone while other zones work fine, that zone’s induction coil or sensor likely needs testing.
