Cutout size and countertop fit
NZ radiant and NA induction cooktops both require a specific countertop cutout with defined clearance to the front edge and side walls. A cutout that’s too tight can put stress on the glass surface during thermal expansion and contraction, occasionally contributing to cracks that appear unrelated to normal use. Confirm your installation matches the template in the installation manual for your exact model before assuming a defect.
Power connection
Cooktops are hardwired to a dedicated 240-volt circuit, and induction models in particular draw significant current across multiple zones when used simultaneously. An undersized circuit or a loose connection at the junction box can cause zones to underperform, cycle unexpectedly, or trigger communication problems between the control board and touch panel. This wiring should only be handled by a licensed electrician or qualified technician.
Clearance below the cooktop
- Ventilation space: the control board and coil drivers for induction models generate heat and need adequate clearance underneath for cooling air to circulate. A cabinet or drawer installed without the specified clearance can cause heat-related problems over time.
- Cabinet drawer interference: some installations place a drawer directly below the cooktop; if that drawer isn’t installed to the specified depth, it can obstruct the cooktop’s junction box or wiring access.
- Sealing at the countertop edge: a cooktop not sealed properly around its perimeter allows spills to seep beneath the glass and reach the touch control ribbon, a common cause of erratic touch response that looks like a control failure.
Induction-specific installation notes
Induction cooktops are more sensitive to nearby metal objects and countertop material than radiant models. If a metal countertop trim or an improperly grounded nearby appliance sits very close to the cooktop’s edge, it can occasionally interfere with pan-detection sensing on the nearest zone, producing a persistent “u” symbol even with compatible cookware centered on the element.
Post-installation break-in
A newly installed cooktop occasionally shows minor touch-panel sensitivity issues in the first few uses as protective film residue or installation dust settles off the glass surface. Wiping the surface thoroughly with a soft cloth after installation, before first use, helps rule out this simple cause before assuming a genuine control failure.
Downdraft ventilation installations
Cooktops paired with a downdraft ventilation system add another installation variable: the downdraft fan housing needs its own duct run and clearance beneath the countertop, separate from the cooktop’s electrical and cutout requirements. If the downdraft fan seems weak or the cooktop trips problems when the fan runs, check that the downdraft duct isn’t sharing an undersized circuit with the cooktop itself.
When it’s a genuine problem rather than installation
If the cutout, power connection, clearance, and seal are all correct and you’re still seeing communication codes, unresponsive touch controls, or a zone that won’t heat with confirmed compatible cookware, the issue is very likely a real component failure — most often the touch control ribbon or the coil driver board.
