A Samsung cooktop that won’t heat, throws an error code, or won’t recognize a pan puts owners in a smaller, more contained version of the repair-or-replace decision. Since a cooktop is typically installed on its own without an attached oven, weighing repair against replacement is usually simpler here than with a full range — but the type of cooktop you have (induction versus radiant electric) changes what’s actually likely to be wrong.
Start with the code, if there is one
Samsung cooktops (NZ radiant electric, NA induction) share the same C-xx MICOM problem family used across the range and oven lines. C-F0, C-F1, or C-F2 signals a communication problem between the control board and elements. C-d0, C-d1, or C-d2 points to a control panel or key issue. C-20, C-21, or C-22 flags a temperature sensor reading out of range, and C-10 is the sensor’s own self-test failure. On induction models, a dashed underlined “u” isn’t a problem at all — it means the cooktop isn’t detecting a compatible pan, usually because the cookware isn’t induction-rated or isn’t centered on the element. A plain “d0” typically means a button is stuck, often from spilled liquid rather than a hardware failure.
Induction failures are different from radiant element failures
On a radiant electric cooktop, a single element that won’t heat is usually a contained, inexpensive repair — the element itself or its switch has failed, and the rest of the cooktop is unaffected. On an induction cooktop, the components involved (induction coils and their driver electronics) are more integrated with the control board, so a failure is somewhat more likely to point toward board-level electronics rather than an isolated part. That doesn’t mean induction repairs are automatically not worth it, but it does mean getting an accurate diagnosis matters more before deciding.
Age and how the cooktop has been used
A cooktop under seven years old with a single failed element or a straightforward sensor code is almost always worth repairing. Past ten years, or if you’re facing a second significant repair within a year, replacement starts to make more sense — particularly for induction models, where newer generations offer meaningfully better pan detection and more precise power control than older units.
Rule out pan and installation issues first
Before assuming a part has failed, confirm you’re using induction-compatible cookware (a magnet should stick to the pan bottom) if the “u” indicator keeps appearing, and check that pans are centered on the element rather than offset. On radiant models, verify the element and its connector aren’t simply caked with spilled food, which can look like a heating failure but is really just poor contact.
Consider what a replacement would offer
If your current cooktop is an older radiant model and you’ve been wanting the faster heat-up and precise control that induction offers, a costly board repair on the old unit is a reasonable point to make the switch. If your cooktop already has the features you want and the failure is isolated, repair remains the more cost-effective path.
