Samsung dishwashers (DW80 series) display specific error codes for most failures, which makes early diagnosis easier than on many other appliances — but the codes are easy to mix up with similar-looking ones from other Samsung categories, so it’s worth confirming against the dishwasher-specific list before assuming the worst.
Common Error codes
- 4C / 4E — water supply problem. Check that the supply valve under the sink is fully open and the inlet screen isn’t clogged with sediment.
- 5C / 5E — drain problem, usually a clogged filter, a kinked drain hose, or a blocked air gap/garbage disposal knockout plug that was never removed at install.
- 1E / IE — filter or heater-related problem; check the removable filter assembly at the bottom of the tub first.
- 3C — drain pump failure.
- 3E — water temperature exceeded a safe threshold.
- 7C / 7E — problem with the WaterWall spray arm/reflector system found on higher-end models.
- 9C / 9E — low water level detected during a cycle.
- bE / 6E — stuck or shorted control panel button.
- LC / LE — leak detected, which triggers the built-in leak sensor and stops the cycle as a safety measure.
- OC / oE — excess water detected in the tub.
Symptoms That Don’t Always Trip a Code
Dishes coming out with a white film are almost always a hard water or rinse-aid issue, not an error code. A dishwasher that runs but leaves standing water at the bottom of the tub after a cycle typically has a clogged filter or check valve rather than a failed pump — check the filter before assuming a 5C/5E drain problem requires a technician. Poor cleaning performance with no code at all is frequently caused by spray arm holes clogged with mineral deposits or food debris.
What Homeowners Can Safely Check
- Remove and rinse the lower filter assembly — this is the single most common fix for both drainage complaints and poor cleaning performance.
- Check the drain hose for kinks where it runs up and over to the garbage disposal or air gap connection.
- Confirm the water supply valve is fully open.
- Inspect spray arm holes for clogs and make sure the arms spin freely by hand.
- Run an affresh or similar dishwasher cleaner cycle monthly to control mineral and grease buildup.
StormWash and WaterWall Models
Higher-end Samsung dishwashers with StormWash or WaterWall spray technology have additional moving parts — a secondary rotating spray arm or a wall-style water jet system — that can accumulate mineral scale faster than a standard single-arm design, particularly in hard water areas. If cleaning performance drops specifically on the StormWash cycle while other cycles still perform normally, check that the dedicated spray jets for that feature aren’t clogged before assuming a broader problem. A 7C/7E code specifically flags an issue with the WaterWall reflector mechanism and shouldn’t be confused with a general spray arm clog.
When to Call a Technician
A recurring LC/LE leak code should never be ignored or reset repeatedly — it means the unit has detected water where it shouldn’t be, and continuing to run it risks water damage. Persistent 3E temperature problems or repeat 5C/5E drain codes after the filter and drain hose have been checked usually point to a failing pump or heater.
