- Scrape large food debris off plates before loading — Samsung dishwashers handle light soil well but aren’t designed to macerate bones, seeds, or large scraps.
- Check the bottom of the tub for anything that’s fallen and could block the spray arm or drain.

- Remove and rinse the lower filter assembly under running water — this single step prevents the majority of drain problems (5C/5E) and poor-cleaning complaints we see.
- Run a dishwasher cleaner cycle (affresh or equivalent) on an empty tub to dissolve grease and mineral film that regular detergent doesn’t fully clear.
- Wipe the door gasket and the seal around the tub opening, where grime and mold can build up.
- Check spray arm holes for clogs and spin each arm by hand to confirm nothing is binding.
Quarterly
- Inspect the drain hose where it connects to the garbage disposal or air gap for kinks or partial clogs.
- Clean the door and control panel to keep buttons responsive and prevent moisture intrusion around the seals.
- If your model has a water softener or salt reservoir setting, confirm it’s still configured correctly for your local water hardness.
Odor Troubleshooting
A persistent smell that survives a filter cleaning and a cleaner cycle is usually one of two things: standing water trapped in the drain hose loop under the sink, or a garbage disposal on the shared drain line that itself needs cleaning, since dishwasher drain water often routes through it. Before assuming the dishwasher itself is responsible, run the disposal with cold water and ice to clear it out, then re-check whether the odor persists.
Detergent, Rinse Aid, and Loading Habits
Use rinse aid consistently — Samsung dishwashers rely on it for both drying performance and to prevent hard water spotting, and running without it is one of the most common causes of a “poor drying” complaint that has nothing to do with the heating element. Load large items so they don’t block the spray arms, and avoid overloading the lower rack, which restricts water coverage and forces the pump to work harder than necessary.
Hard Water Considerations
In hard water areas, mineral scale builds up on heating elements and spray arm jets faster than detergent alone can prevent, even with regular filter cleaning. If you notice a white, chalky film on glassware that rinse aid and dishwasher cleaner don’t fully resolve, consider a dishwasher-specific descaling product on a quarterly basis in addition to the monthly cleaner cycle.
