Samsung DW80-series dishwashers display a short code on the control panel when the internal diagnostics catch something wrong. Here’s a breakdown of what each group of codes points to and what’s worth checking before assuming the worst.
Water supply and low-water codes
4C or 4E means the dishwasher isn’t detecting enough incoming water — check that the supply valve under the sink is fully open and the inlet hose isn’t kinked. A 9C or 9E code, low water, is similar but can also point to a partially clogged inlet valve screen rather than the supply itself being shut off. Both are worth checking at the source before assuming a valve needs replacing.
Drain and excess water codes
5C or 5E indicates a drain problem, most commonly a clogged filter basket at the bottom of the tub or a kinked drain hose — the filter is meant to be removed and rinsed periodically, and a neglected filter is one of the most common causes of this code. OC or oE means the opposite: too much water detected in the tub, which can stem from a stuck-open water valve or a failed water-level sensor.
Heating and temperature codes
3E flags water temperature exceeding roughly 176°F, a safety cutoff. HC means an over-temperature condition, HE means the temperature sensor isn’t detecting heat correctly, and tE is a general temperature sensor failure. These all relate to the heating circuit but can stem from different failed parts — a thermistor, a heating element stuck on, or a control board misread — so isolating the actual cause takes hands-on testing rather than guessing from the code alone.
WaterWall and filter-related codes
7C or 7E is specific to Samsung’s WaterWall models and flags a problem with the reflector mechanism that fans water across the bottom rack — this is a Samsung-specific system not found on other brands, so parts and diagnosis for it are somewhat specialized. 1E or IE points to the self-clean filter or heater circuit; check that the filter basket is properly seated and free of debris before assuming a sensor has failed.
Button, pump, and leak codes
bE or 6E means a button is registering as stuck pressed on the control panel. 3C indicates a pump failure, often related to drainage or circulation. LC or LE flags a leak detected by the base pan sensor — if you see this code, it’s worth checking under the unit for standing water and having it inspected promptly rather than continuing to run cycles, since running a dishwasher with an active leak can damage cabinetry and flooring.
Checking before you call
Before assuming a code means a part has failed, it’s worth eliminating the simple causes: is the water supply valve fully open, is the filter basket clean and properly seated, and is the door latching without resistance? These three checks resolve a meaningful share of dishwasher error codes on their own, since fill, drain, and door-related problems often trace back to something that just needs clearing or adjusting rather than a broken component.
When to call for service
A code that clears after unplugging the unit for a minute and doesn’t return is often a minor glitch. A code that repeats, especially anything involving heat, drainage, or a detected leak, is worth having diagnosed rather than reset repeatedly.
