8C, paired with 8E on other display formats, points to Samsung’s MEMS sensor — a motion/vibration sensor used on many washer models to detect how the load is moving during spin, separate from the mechanical balance switches used on older designs. This code means the board isn’t receiving a usable signal from that sensor.
What the MEMS sensor does
The MEMS (micro-electromechanical system) sensor sits on or near the tub and reports vibration and movement data the control board uses to detect an unbalanced load and adjust spin speed accordingly. An 8C problem typically comes from:
- A loose or disconnected wiring connector at the sensor itself
- Physical damage to the sensor from an unusually severe unbalanced spin event
- A sensor that has failed internally and stopped transmitting a valid signal
- A control board failure in reading a sensor that’s working correctly
What to check before calling for service
Power the washer off at the breaker for a minute, then run a small, evenly distributed load through a short cycle to see whether the problem clears. Chronic unbalanced loads — a single heavy item like a comforter, or consistently overloading the drum — put extra strain on this sensor over time, so distributing laundry more evenly across future loads is worth trying alongside a power cycle.
If 8C persists across multiple cycles regardless of load size, the sensor or its connector needs direct inspection. It’s mounted on the tub assembly, which on most Samsung washers means removing the top or rear panel to reach — not something to attempt without familiarity with the tub and suspension assembly.
