5C on a Samsung washer means the machine can’t drain the tub within its expected time. The control senses that water level isn’t dropping and halts the cycle rather than continuing to agitate or spin against standing water.
What Usually Blocks the Drain
- The drain pump filter — a small door near the base of front-load washers — packed with lint, coins, buttons, or a stray sock
- A kinked or sagging drain hose behind the machine
- A drain standpipe or utility sink that’s clogged downstream of the washer
- A worn drain pump that spins but no longer moves water efficiently
Owner-Safe Checks
Locate the pump filter access panel at the bottom front of the cabinet, place a shallow pan underneath, and open it slowly — residual water will run out. Clear out anything trapped inside and spin the small impeller by hand to make sure it turns freely. Next, pull the washer out enough to inspect the drain hose for kinks or a low sag that traps water, and confirm the standpipe it empties into isn’t backed up with debris.
Run a short rinse-and-spin cycle after clearing the filter. If the tub drains normally, the blockage was the fix. If 5C reappears immediately, the pump motor itself is the more likely suspect.
