A few consistent habits go a long way toward keeping a Samsung washer (WA top-load or WF front-load, including StormWash and FlexWash models) running reliably and avoiding the service calls that come from preventable buildup or misuse. This guide is independent and not affiliated with Samsung.

Prevent the most common front-load issue: odor and mold buildup

Front-load WF washers seal tightly during the cycle, which is great for efficiency but means the door boot gasket and drum stay damp longer than a top-load machine. Leaving the door closed immediately after a cycle traps that moisture and is the single biggest contributor to musty odors and mold along the gasket fold. Leave the door cracked open between loads, and wipe the inside of the door boot dry every so often to catch standing water in the fold before it becomes a persistent smell.

Run a maintenance cycle regularly

Most Samsung washers include a dedicated tub-clean or self-clean cycle, often flagged on the display after a set number of regular cycles. Running it monthly (or when prompted) with the drum empty helps clear detergent residue and mineral buildup that regular wash cycles leave behind, especially in areas with hard water.

Use the right amount and type of detergent

  • Use HE (high-efficiency) detergent only: Samsung’s high-efficiency washers use much less water per cycle than older machines, and non-HE detergent produces excess suds that can trigger a SUd error code and leave residue throughout the machine.
  • Don’t overfill the detergent drawer or dispenser: more detergent doesn’t mean cleaner clothes — it means more residue buildup in the dispenser drawer and drain system over time.
  • Clean the detergent drawer periodically: pull it out and rinse it under running water every few weeks to prevent hardened detergent from clogging the dispensing mechanism.

Keep loads balanced

Consistently overloading the drum, or repeatedly washing single heavy items like a comforter alone, stresses the suspension system and is a common contributor to UE, Ub, or Ur (unbalanced) codes over time. Distribute laundry evenly and avoid packing the drum past the recommended fill line, even though it can be tempting to fit in one more load.

Check and clean the drain filter and pump

Many Samsung washers have an accessible drain filter near the bottom front of the machine. Small items — coins, buttons, socks — can work their way into this filter and eventually restrict drainage, contributing to 5E, 5C, or nd codes. Checking it every few months, especially if you notice slower draining, prevents a simple clog from turning into a service call.

Don’t ignore small leaks or condensation

A small puddle near the base of a front-load washer or condensation forming inside the door boot fold is worth investigating right away rather than wiping up and forgetting about it. Left unaddressed, water finding its way past the door boot or a supply connection can eventually reach the control board bay at the base of the machine, turning an inexpensive seal or hose fix into a far more serious electrical repair.

When maintenance isn’t enough

If you’re staying on top of cleaning cycles, detergent use, and balanced loads and still seeing recurring error codes, the issue is likely a genuine component wearing out rather than a habit to correct.
